NATIONAL HISTORY DAY IN WISCONSIN


For middle school and high school students participating in the National History Day in Wisconsin competition, the Wisconsin Labor History Society annually offers prizes for the best projects on American labor history at each of the Wisconsin regional events, as well as the Wisconsin state finals:


Two $50 awards are offered at each of Wisconsin’s REGIONAL events to be given for the best American labor history entries to be selected from any competition category; one award will be given at the junior age level (grades 6-8) and one award at the senior age level (grades 9-12).
Two $100 awards are offered at the Wisconsin History Day STATE event to be given for the best American labor history entries (one award at the junior age level and one award at the senior age level) to be selected from any competition category.

HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST


All Wisconsin high school students (grades 9-12) are eligible to participate in a High School Essay Contest conducted annually by the Wisconsin Labor History Society. The high school students are asked to write an essay of approximately 750 words on the following theme: “Unions have been important to my family and my community because …” and up to eight cash prizes are awarded for the best. The prizes will include one $500 first-place prize, one $300 second-place prize, one $200 third-place prize, and up to five $100 prizes for honorable mention. ZEIDLER ACADEMIC AWARDS


For Research Papers in Wisconsin Labor and Working-Class History

For college and university students, the Wisconsin Labor History Society conducts an annual competition to determine the winners of the Zeidler Academic Awards for the best original research papers about Wisconsin labor and working-class history. The awards honor Milwaukee Mayor Frank P. Zeidler, the most recent Socialist to hold that office (1948-1960), for his lifelong efforts toward the advancement of Wisconsin’s citizens. Two cash prizes are offered each year:


One $500 prize for an original, previously unpublished research paper of approximately 4,000-8,000 words produced by an undergraduate student enrolled in any college or university (not restricted to Wisconsin or to four-year programs); and,


One $1,000 prize for an original research paper or article of approximately 8,000-14,000 words produced by a student enrolled in any graduate program (not restricted to Wisconsin), including law and other professional departments.
